President Lazarus Chakwera Tuesday morning left the country to attend the 6th Transform Africa Summit in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.
Speaking at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe prior to departure, President Chakwera said digitalisation is unavoidable in as far as inclusive development is concerned.
“Digitalisation and development are twins that are going together, growing together in making sure that Africa reaches that kind of development where everybody; men, women and the youth all participate in what is good for them. Malawi is proud to be part of this smart Africa now,” said the President.
The Transform Africa Summit is a platform through which global and regional leaders from government, private sector and international organisations consider new ways to shape, accelerate and sustain Africa’s ongoing digital revolution.
The platform is also expected to highlight the importance of digital revolution in light of the continent’s pursuit of the African Continental Free Trade Area whereby Malawi will pursue ways to leverage a revolution to address her own obstacles and support development.
Speaking ahead of the president’s arrival in Zimbabwe, in an interview monitored on public broadcaster, MBC Television, Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Moses Kunkuyu said digital elements are relevant in all spheres of life.
“In Malawi, the internet is facilitating more than what meets the eye in areas of education and research and plans are underway to further boost access to the internet especially in terms of affordability,” said Kunkuyu.
He further said Malawi’s patronage to the summit demonstrates government’s practical commitment towards harnessing digital possibilities to accelerate economic growth.
The President who was seen off by Vice President Saulos Chilima, along with other government ministers and officials, returns Tuesday evening.
