Women’s Football Association (WFA) has proposed for the final of the FAM Goshen City to be the curtain-raiser of the Super League fixture between Silver Strikers and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.
The final of the 2024 FAM Goshen City Football Championship and Super League’s game of the week between Silver Strikers and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have been scheduled for the same date, Sunday, 19th May 2024 but in different venues.
Wanderers will face flying Bankers at Silver Stadium while the last game of the Women’s Championship is set to be played at Bingu National Stadium but the football fraternity says the situation will affect the patronage of the games because Women’s Football is growing at an alarming rate in Malawi and Silver Strikers and Wanderers have a big fanbase.
Seasoned Sports Journalist, Lifu Litete earlier this week suggested that this week’s biggest Sulom texture should be shifted to Saturday paving the way for the final of the Goshen Championship.
“If I were Fleetwood Haiya the current Football Association of Malawi President, I would have humbled myself and called for an emergency meeting with my Sulom counterpart to propose for the shifting of the time Super League match involving rivals Silver Strikers and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.
“I would put forward this suggestion on the basis that on the same day these 2 giants clash, the capital city will also be hosting the final of the ongoing Goshen City FAM Women Football Championship. I would highlight to my learned Sulom colleague how vast women’s football is growing in the country as evidenced by both the quality of play as well as patronage.
“I would therefore appeal to my Sulom colleague that Lilongwe should be given a chance to witness both the high-profile match involving Silver and Wanderers as well as the women’s football final. And this can only be achieved by having the 2 games separated with one being played on Saturday and another one on Sunday.
“I would remind my Sulom colleague of how the women’s football final of last year broke the record at Mpira Stadium as the stadium was filled to capacity just because there was no other competing football activity within the city of Blantyre on the day the final was played,” he said.
Women’s Football Association Chairperson, Adelaide Migogo said the association hasn’t proposed the shifting of the fixture but rather shifted the game to Bingu National Stadium and having a late kick-off.
“We have proposed to Sulom that our game [Championship final] should be the curtain-raiser of the Silver, Wanderers’ game. We talked to officials from Sulom.
“We wanted people to appreciate how women are playing football because some of the people do not know how women are playing football. They should read in the paper.
“We proposed that the games should be played at one venue, ours to start earlier and the main game to start later on. However, chances are 50-50 that others can go to Silver Stadium and others can go to Bingu National Stadium. We have tried to contact three people. But I think we are a bit late, discussions are still underway. We don’t know what their decision will be,” Migogo was quoted by MBC Radio 2 .
Meanwhile, Sulom is yet to comment on the matter. Silver Strikers are leading the table with 16 points from six games and the game against Mighty Mukuru Wanderers could be one of those title lighters.
Ascent Academy Women’s Team will face MDF Lioness as they beat Silver Strikers Ladies and Civil Women’s Team respectively on Friday at Bingu National Stadium.
