The devastating effects of Cyclone Freddy, which hit Malawi in March 2023, have resulted in many deaths, severe damage to properties, and left a lot of people homeless and living in camps.
This forced government to declare the State of Emergency and called for support from well-wishers to survivors in heavily affected areas of Nsanje, Thyolo, Mulanje, Phalombe, Blantyre, Chikwawa, Zomba, Mangochi, and other areas in the Southern region.
As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Unicaf University in Malawi has donated relief items through the Red Cross Society Malawi to support the Cyclone Freddy survivors.
The donation, worth K2 million included cartoons of cooking oil, bales of salt, bales of sugar, bales of Soya pieces, and blankets.
Speaking after presenting the donation, Unicaf University in Malawi Vice-Chancellor, Dr Robert Ridley, said the university believes in giving back to society that’s why they thought it wise to come in and assist the cyclone survivors.
Dr Ridley expressed hope that the emergency relief items would assist the survivors in rebuilding their lives and communities.
“Unicaf University is committed to contributing to the development of communities and promoting social responsibility. The University will continue to engage in CSR activities to support the communities around them,” said Dr Ridley who was accompanied by students
Red Cross Society representative Mercy Chalimba thanked the university for the generous donation and support saying it shows that they are responsible and caring.
