Identification for triathlon national team athletes begins

The Triathlon Union of Malawi has started the process of identifying athletes to represent the country in upcoming international tournaments.

This has been revealed by Triathlon Union of Malawi General Secretary Grem Chilomo during national championship that took place on Saturday in Lilongwe.

Triathlon, is an endurance multisport race consisting of swimming, cycling, and running over various distances.

Chilomo said they invited six athletes for the tournament as they are trying to identify quality athletes for the national team.

“We have received six participants here, two from each region who are performing national championship”

“This is very important tournament because we’ve started identifying players for national team” he said

Among different upcoming international tournaments, Chilomo said Triathlon national team will travel to Zambia next year summer for Zambian Triathlon competition.

Next year between June and August will be going to Zambia so we are trying as much as possible to finetune our athletes and make them ready to compete with their counterparts” he added

Meanwhile, Grem Chilomo has revealed plans to bring the game in Lakeshore areas where there are alot of people with swimming talent.

“We want to bring the game along the lake, places like Chintheche, Karonga, Nkhatabay, Cape Maclear because there are already good swimmers in these areas who can easily improve with trainings”

However, Chilomo has appealed to the general Public to support the Association by constructing a good swimming pool and buying bicycles for trainings.

One of the athletes, Madalitso Golden Chimombo concurred with Chilomo on the need for equipments and infrastructure for the sport.

Chimombo further appealed to the youth to join triathlon for their own benefits as well as national benefits.

“Iam happy because I have learnt alot in swimming as well as running, I have improved alot and we are still preparing to enhance skills”

“This is a great sport, I urge the youth to come and join us because it’s has alot of benefits, talking of healthy wise it improves ones physicality, maybe in the near future we shall have sponsors and it will be source of income to some of us and again if we do better at international level definitely this sport will put Malawi on map” said Chimombo

Since the introduction of this sport in the country, The Triathlon Union of Malawi has conducted several national and regional tournament, most recently happened in the north in September this year and at Bishop Makenzie International High School in July.
