Minister of Agriculture Sam Kawale has denied allegations that government is favouring the Central Region in the implementation of Mega Farms program.
On Thursday, Member of Parliament for Thyolo Thava Mary Navicha rose in Parliament during question time, claiming that the initiative is only benefiting the Central part of Malawi.
“What I have seen is that almost 99% of the Mega Farm program is in the Central Region” she said.
Furthermore, Navicha claimed that Government did not provide information on how to access the money for Mega Farms to the opposition legislators.
But in his response, Kawale denied the allegations saying all constituencies have been benefiting equally.
“We have over 30 members of Parliament right now who are into commercial farming. These members are not just from the Central region, we also have quite a number of them in Mangochi, Balaka and some are in Machinga” said Kawale.
The Minister further urged every Malawian who is interested in crop production or raising livestock to register with Mega Farms Support Unit so that they can be considered funding as well as access to markets.
In the livestock category, government is looking at the quantity for a farm to qualify for Mega Farms Support Unit, while for the crops production they are looking at land holding size and maximum productivity on a specific hector range.
This year, government has pumped in over one trillion kwacha in commercial farming as it eyes to address food insecurity in the country.
