The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has rolled out a Secure Your WhatsApp campaign to address the growing cases of WhatsApp hacking and fraud across the country.
According to the statement by MACRA, this campaign aims to educate users on enhancing their account security by enabling Two-Step Verification, an essential measure to protect personal information and prevent unauthorized access.
MACRA said the rise in WhatsApp-related fraud has seen scammers gaining access to accounts and impersonating users to solicit money from their contacts.
It further urged the public to remain vigilant, think twice, and always verify the authenticity of any requests before sending money.
To safeguard WhatsApp account one has to follow the two-Step Verification; “first, Open WhatsApp and go to Settings, then tap Account. After tapping the account select Two-step verification and lastly follow the prompts to complete the process” reads part of statement.
MACRA believes this simple security feature adds an extra layer of protection, making it harder for hackers to access your account.
Under the hashtag #SecureYourWhatsAppMw, MACRA said it is committed to creating awareness and fostering a safer digital environment for all Malawians.
