President Lazarus Chakwera departure for the 77th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States of America (USA) has been delayed.
Chakwera was expected to leave at 3pm on Monday for the meeting slated for 13th to 27th September.
According to Minister of Information, Gospel Kazako, the plane which is expected to carry Chakwera awaits clearance from engineers.
“The President’s departure has been delayed following a request from aircraft engineers for more time to finish their operational clearance of the plane for take off. Once the clearance is done, a new time for the President’s departure will be communicated to the public,” said Kazako
In a statement released on Friday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the President is to spend 15 days in USA.
“Apart from addressing the General Assembly, His Excellency the President will hold more than 40 other engagements over the course of 15 days, including high-level meetings with world leaders and heads of various international institutions, all geared towards mobilizing over a billion dollars in resources for various sectors in Malawi,” reads the statement in part
On his way to New York, the statement says, Chakwera will stop over in Nairobi, Kenya, where he will attend the inauguration ceremony of William Ruto, President-Elect of the Republic of Kenya, on September 13, 2022.
