The ministry of labour has stressed the need for strengthening labour related laws as a way of addressing the existing gaps.
Principal Secretary in the ministry of Labour Chikondano Mussa made the remarks on Monday at the opening of a two-day consultative meeting.
The consultative meeting is aimed at strengthening labour related laws for the attainment of decent and sustainable economic development in the country.
Mussa further appreciated that the review has come at a right time at a crucial time where they will be able to align with the current legislations of the land as well as International Labour Organization, (ILO) conventions.
“This is a very important process as I stated that some of the laws and acts were in acted in 90’s and early 2000 so this is a long time ago, alot has emerged and therefore we just wanted to review these laws and to align them to so many other laws of the land as well as international labor organization conventions” she said
Mussa further appealed to the consultants to fast track the process of reviewing the laws.
The meeting has been organized by Zantchito Skills for jobs which is an EU funded project.
To his part EU Labour Laws consultant, Dr. Rodgers Matsikidze said as EU they are trying to improve efficiencies in Malawi labour laws and making them more competitive, globally.
“We are looking at key areas, for example, enhancing dispute resolution mechanisms for employees and employers, eleminating hazardous practices for children and attracting investors through a robust labour framework are some of the key areas of focus through the program”
Zantchito skills for jobs Programme is an EU funded project, designed to create an enabling environment for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) as well as to strengthening related labour laws for the attainment of decent jobs and sustainable economic development.
