Anticipation is growing as investigators prepare to unveil preliminary findings in August following the tragic crash of a military Do228-202(K) aircraft, which claimed the life of former Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others during a domestic flight from Lilongwe to Mzuzu.

The incident, occurring in challenging weather conditions, resulted in the complete destruction of the plane

In response to a formal request from the Malawian government, the German Federal Bureau of Aircraft Accident Investigation (BFU) swiftly dispatched a specialized investigative team.

Supported by experts from the Civil Aviation Administration of Malawi and the Malawi Armed Forces, the team conducted a thorough examination encompassing the crash site, departure and destination aerodromes, and the aircraft’s operational history from its home base.

Central to the investigation is the analysis of critical data retrieved intact from a Global Positioning System (GPS) device found amidst the wreckage.

Currently undergoing meticulous scrutiny at the BFU’s advanced recorder and avionics laboratory, this device holds pivotal flight data expected to shed light on the circumstances surrounding the accident.

The rigorousness of this analysis underscores the BFU’s dedication to uncovering precise details essential for enhancing aviation safety standards.

Under the guidelines of Annex 13 of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Convention, Malawi delegated oversight of the investigation to the BFU.

By the end of August, the BFU plans to release an Interim Report in both German and English on its official website (www.bfu-web.de/EN/).

This interim document will provide a comprehensive overview of findings up to that point, addressing various speculations circulating in social media and political spheres regarding the accident’s cause.

It is important to note that the BFU’s investigation remains entirely independent of judicial or administrative proceedings, focusing solely on accident prevention and safety enhancement measures.

Following the Interim Report’s release, a Final Report will follow, presenting in-depth analysis, conclusions, identified causes, and potential safety recommendations.

These reports will strictly adhere to established accident investigation protocols, ensuring objectivity and refraining from assigning blame or liability.

As public interest in the incident continues, the forthcoming reports aim to offer clarity and factual insights into the circumstances leading to the tragic crash.

This thorough and transparent approach underscores the critical importance of robust aviation safety protocols and emphasizes the BFU’s commitment to advancing global aviation safety through meticulous investigation and transparent reporting.
