The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced the withdrawal of Malawi Senior National team from participating in the 2024 COSAFA Championship slated for 26th June to 7th July.
Calisto Pasuwa was supposed to lead the Under 23 to this year’s Senior COSAFA Challenge tournament with Bob Mpinganjira and Prichard Mwansa as first and second assistants but their hopes has been dented following the announcement.
In a statement released today, FAM says it has made the decision as a way of showing respect to the souls of the State Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima and nine others who lost their lives in a plane crash last Monday.
“Considering the sorrowful atmosphere as the result of the tragic passing of the State Vice President, Right Honourable Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima and nine others and the subsequent 21-day mourning period declared by the government, FAM highly considered it insensitive to proceed with our preparations and subsequent participation in the championship”.
However, FAM says it will remain committed to the technical development and growth of Malawi Football National team.
To ensure continued preparation and competitive readiness, FAM promises to be arranging a series of international friendly matches in due course.
