Thyolo Thava legislator Mary Navicha has bemoaned government’s slow response to help Tropical Cyclone Freddy’s victims in her Constituency.
In an interview with The Atlas, Navicha said since the tragedy happened government has only donated 750 bags of maize in her area which is little compared to the number of affected people.
“It’s just very unfortunate that up to now Government has not responded quickly to assist these victims, people are suffering, they are lacking food, blankets, they are sleeping on the floor, they don’t have clothes, no safe water, but the only time we received something from Government it was 750 bags of maize which is not enough to deal with the situation” she said
Navicha further wondered where government has been channelling billions of donations it has been receiving since the Tropical Cyclone Freddy happened.
“We have been hearing that Government has received billions of donations but people in camps are still suffering, we don’t get anything from Government so I wonder what are they doing with the donations if the victims are sidelined”
She further asked government to fairly assist all victims other than concentrating in a particular area.
The former Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Minister has further asked government to start working on rehabilitating the roads and bridges that were swept away by running water during the cyclone period as some people failing to resume their businesses due to poor roads connections.
She thanked well wishers for the donations rendered to her people and has urged them to continue with their support to the Tropical Cyclone Freddy victims in different ways.
In Thyolo Thava Constituency, over 10,000 houses were swept away leading people to seek shelter in 13 camps consisting of over 600 people each.
