The Super League of Malawi (SULOM) held its Annual General Meeting on Saturday where affiliates have called for an extraordinary general meeting where the body’s next president is going to be decided through votes.

The two positions at SULOM became vacant in December when President Fleetwood Haiya arose to FAM together with Executive member Daudi Mtanthiko.

Following Haiya’s departure, vice president Colonel Gilbert Mitawa has been heading the body on acting basis and he was supposed to be ratified as the next President at the AGM, a move which has been denied by some affiliates.

“SULOM must be ruled as an institution governed in line with its constitution. There’s a procedure that is prescribed in the constitution of SULOM, for filling these vacancies and it stipulates that if there’s a vacancy the exco can appoint a member within the exco to fill it, pretty much on an acting capacity until next AGM,” said Mighty Mukuru Wanderers Director, David Kanyenda who led those opposing the move.

He added; “What they were proposing, the ratification has no space in the constitution and that’s why we opposed it and gladly we are happy that Sulom executive agreed that they should conduct an extraordinary general meeting for a purpose of filling these two vacancies”.

Meanwhile, Mitawa has accepted the resolution, meaning he will continue working as the acting president.

However, Mitawa has mentioned lack of funds as a major worry to commit to Kanyenda’s wish of having the EGM within the next 28 days.

“As someone with legal background, who respects the rule of law and our own statues and constitution am very happy that the Clubs have made that particular resolution because it means moving forward the precedent is going to be clear and should we have situation like this in future, everyone including the clubs will know that this is the direction that needs to be taken”

“If you ask me when the EGM is going to happen, for now I cannot make any commitment as to regard the date, as regard the funds because that is something that as an executive committee we have to go back see where can we identify the funds for an EGM but also most importantly if there’s need to approach FAM to assist us then we need to make that particular decision” said Mitawa.

Apart from this resolution, Clubs have also asked SULOM live up to the aspiration of increasing Clubs subvention as well as ensuring that the gate revenue is maximized for purpose of the Clubs.

Responding to the issue of subvention, FAM President Fleetwood Haiya who was in attendance has assured teams that they will receive the minimum of K20 Million subvention during the 2024 season as per his election promise.
