The ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) has announced that it is open to forming an electoral alliance with any party willing to support its presidential candidate ahead of the 2025 general elections.
Speaking at a political rally at Mchepa Primary School in Salima on Sunday, MCP spokesperson Jesse Kabwila stated that while the party remains confident of securing victory on its own, it is not opposed to alliances.
“If there is a party willing to support Lazarus Chakwera as the presidential candidate in the forthcoming elections, we are open to forming an alliance with them,” Kabwila said.
However, she emphasized that MCP is not desperate for an alliance.
“It should be a party with vision, ambition, and a commitment to improving the lives of Malawians—ensuring financial stability and food security. But we know that Malawians believe in us, and we are ready to contest with or without an alliance,” she added.
MCP was previously part of the Tonse Alliance, a coalition formed in 2020 alongside the United Transformation Movement (UTM) and other parties. The alliance, however, fractured last year following the death of UTM leader and Vice President Saulos Chilima in June.
During the 2020 campaign, Chilima assured Malawians that Chakwera would support his presidential bid in 2025.
However, Chakwera later announced his intention to seek re-election, fueling speculation about internal divisions and power struggles within the alliance.
The 2025 general elections are scheduled for September 16, 2025.
