While hailing Bwaila Media Club’s (BMC) incredible strides, MISA Malawi chairperson Golden Matonga has urged media clubs in the country to serve as think tanks.

He was speaking in Salima during the BMC Annual General Meeting on Saturday.

“As a member of this club for over a decade, I am personally delighted to witness the incredible strides the BMC has made. From the steady growth of your membership to the increasing vibrancy and relevance of your activities, BMC has grown from strength to strength. This success is a direct result of sound leadership and the unwavering commitment of every member. You all deserve a round of applause.

“Clubs such as the BMC, Nyika Press Club, Blantyre Press Club, and the Lower Shire Press Club have become vital pillars of our media landscape. They provide a space where practitioners can socialize and collectively confront the challenges confounding our profession.

“In an era where mental health is a major global concern, we need clubs like the BMC to cater to our wellness. I, for one, am looking forward to “unwinding” during the famous Mix and Mingle. Those who attend this AGM regularly can attest that the Mix and Mingle is my favorite activity—second only, of course, to watching Arsenal remain at the top of the league!

“Beyond the social aspect, the BMC has demonstrated a profound sense of duty through its Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives—from tree planting and school donations to career mentorship for young learners. You have proven that journalists are not just observers of society, but active participants in its development.

“However, I believe media clubs should also serve as think tanks. They should be the homes of intellectual debate where we deliberate on the future of our fraternity. They should be platforms where the most influential voices in society engage journalists on nation-building, economics, politics, and media relations,” he said

Washon

In his remarks, BMC chairperson Felix Washon said the club’s existence underscores a shared commitment to fostering professional growth and collaboration.

“Your enthusiasm strengthens our network of media practitioners and communication professionals. Members, your active involvement in today’s AGM discussions and throughout our club’s activities is vital to shaping our future—please speak up, share insights, and engage fully.

“Greater participation will drive impactful initiatives and keep our club vibrant. Our male socials football team deserves heartfelt thanks for their consistent activity and dedication, bringing energy and unity to the club—keep up the excellent work.

“We now encourage our female netball team to revive their efforts with the same passion, as renewed participation will enrich our social bonds. Ladies and gentlemen, I wish to inform you that BMC is engaging medical scheme and funeral cover providers to establish partnerships with the aim of properly supporting one another in times of need,” he said
