Football Association of Malawi (FAM) has announced that play offs for this year’s National Women’s Football competition will be played on Sunday, February 26, 2023 at Ascent Academy ground in Lilongwe.
According to FAM statement, the play offs will determine a team that will join nine team that already qualified to the national final.
“The FAM Women’s National Championship will be participated by 10 teams. This comprise of top three teams in the 2022 FAM Regional Women’s Football Leagues, which brings the total to nine, plus one of the fourth placed teams. The tenth team will be determined by play-offs among the fourth placed teams” reads the statement
The fixture indicates that Civil Service United Women from the Central Region will play Ekwendeni Sisters in an opening match which starts at 9am before facing Zomba based Attu Bullets from southern region at 11:30 am.
The final match will kickstart at 14:00hrs between Ekwendeni Sisters and Attu Bullets.
The winner of the play offs will join Regional top 3 teams, Nyasa Big Bullets Women, Ntopwa, Evirom from south, Northerners CY Sisters, Moyale Barracks and Topik as well as Ascent Academy, DD Sunshine and Destiny Academy from the Central Region.
FAM has also advised teams to use players registered with their respective Regional Women’s Football Association for the 2022 Season and will use Mpira Connect and their Leagues Registration cards for identification.
“The Mpira connect registration is a must and only those actively registered in the Mpira Connect System will be eligible to participate”
The Championship will be played in two phases as in the first phase the ten teams will be divided into two groups of five each. Teams in each group will play against each other in a single round robin and top two teams will make it to the semifinals.
While in the phase two, the two top teams from each region will then paired for semifinals to determine the two finalists. Semifinal losers will meet in the third place playoff.
This seasons national women’s final will kick off on March 11th and will run up to 7th May.
The Championship will get K3million with the runnerup getting the half down of that amount.
