Former students of Robert Laws Secondary School have elected engineer, James Brian Nthara as Chairperson of their Alumni Association.
In virtual elections held on Thursday, Nthara defeated two other candidates, Blantyre based lawyer, Mateyu Sisya and Mzuzu based accountant, Adolf Kapondera.
South African based Chandie Ngwira was elected Vice Chair while Alex Mafeni Soko and Glory Mndoli, both based in Lilongwe, were elected Secretary General and Vice, respectively.
Mzuzu based Samuel Munthali was elected the association’s Treasurer while Adolf Kapondera, Goodson Mkanda, Mateyu Sisya and Saston Kanthonga are committee members.
Robert Laws is one of the oldest secondary schools in Malawi initially established as a teachers training college before it was converted to a national boarding secondary school in 1974.
The Robert Laws alumni association was formed in order to build a society of ex-students that fosters a sense of belonging.
The alumni association as an independent non-profit organization whose members aim to offer financial and material support to their former school and its current students as well as promote networking and togetherness amongst ex-students.
Nthara, who was at Robert laws between 1980 and 1986, has now become the alumni association’s second leader, after Salima based Malawi Defence Force Officer, Boster Chiguza Kumwenda who served as Chair for two consecutive terms.
Speaking after the announcement of election results, Nthara said he was grateful to have been elected in a diverse group that has people of different professions.
“I am committed to make our term of office a success by learning from the outgoing team and also collectively running affairs of the association with this (newly elected) team,” Nthara said.
