Six police officers who were convicted of murder for Buleya Lule, a suspect who died in custody, have received a combined 95-year jail term.
In December last year, High Court judge, Justice Chifundo Kachale convicted Paul Chipole, Ikram Malata, Richard Kalawire, Innocent Lwanda, Maxwell Mbuzi and Abel Maseya have been convicted of murder.
However, the court acquitted former Police Commissioner Evelista Goodwin Mvula, Steven Mashonga, Warren Joshua Mashonga and Chifundo Chiwambo who were answering various charges ranging from murder and causing grievous bodily harm.

The other four, Richard Kalawire, Innocent Wanda, Maxwell Mbidzi and Abel Maseya have been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment each for the same offense.
The Judge did not hand sentences on the second count of causing grievous harm because he said it was the cause of the death of Lule.
Buleya was found dead in a police cell at Lilongwe Police Station on the morning of 21 February 2019 and an inquiry report by Malawi Human Rights Commission implicated the 13 police officers on the case.
