As a gesture of goodwill, students of Maranatha Girls Capital Academy in Lilongwe on Wednesday February 25 donated writing materials to students of Ching’ombe Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) as a way of motivating the students from the CDSS to remain focused on their education.
The assorted items were worth over K350 000. The contributions came from students themselves.
Epaphania Kafinyangwe said as Maranatha students hey realize that there are other students who are less privileged who struggle to find basic items like writing materials so they pooled their resources together to bail out their colleagues.
“As students we contributed some resources and our initial plan was to go and cheer the sick at any nearby hospital but on a second thought, we decided to come to our friends here at Ching’ombe and help them with exercise books with pens and to encourage them to work hard so that they achieve their dreams,” she said.
In an interview, head teacher of Maranatha Girls Capital Academy Kingsley Dombola said reaching out to the underprivileged is one of the pillars of the institution.
“We teach our students to embrace the spirit of giving to those who are lacking. Students contributed money and bought over 250 exercise books and pens which have been distributed to the CDSS,” Dombola said.
Maxwell Thomas a student at Ching’ombe CDSS has hailed the gesture by Maranatha saying it is rare.
“We are all students supported by parents so to see some who come from privileged families spend their pocket monies on us who are underprivileged is something we cannot take for granted.
“Being visited by a big High School like Maranatha is motivation to us all. Many of us lack writing materials and this donation has been timely,” he said.
William CHabani head of science department who spoke on behalf of the head teacher of Ching’ombe CDSS, thanked the management of Maranatha Girls Capital Academy for the kind gesture to come motivate the students at the CDSS.
“It is misconstrued that students from High Schools are pompous and can hardly mingle with low class students from a village like ours. So to see these girls come here to interact and distribute the writing materials is something very commendable,”
All students who were found at the school were given two exercise books and pens while students who were in the top five from the end of term results of first term were each given five exercise books and pens.
Before going to Ching’ombe the Maranatha girls toured parliament chambers where they met officials from parliament who explained to them how parliament works.
From there they also visited bottled water distilling company Cool Drop.
