The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has unanimously endorsed former President Prof. Peter Mutharika as its candidate for the 2025 general elections. The decision was made at the party’s national elective conference at the COMESA Hall in Blantyre, where Mutharika was the guest of honor.

In his keynote address, Mutharika urged DPP delegates to prioritize competence and capacity when electing individuals to party positions. He cautioned against selecting leaders based on religious, tribal, or other interests, emphasizing the need for a strong team to steer the party back to government.

“Mutharika’s call for competent leadership was well-received by the delegates, who are eager to see the DPP return to power,” said a party insider.

The conference has been attended by representatives from international organizations, including OXFAM and the European Union, lending credibility to the DPP’s electoral process.

Voting for party positions is expected to commence this afternoon, with Mutharika’s endorsement setting the tone for the party’s leadership lineup.

As the DPP gears up for the 2025 elections, Mutharika’s leadership is seen as a crucial factor in the party’s bid to regain power. His experience as a former president and his popularity among party members make him a strong candidate.
