  • Kaliati’s penalty strike hands Wanderers advantage over Bangwe in Airtel

Kaliati’s penalty strike hands Wanderers advantage over Bangwe in Airtel

Wanderers cash in. New week, new game, different competitions same Isaac Kaliati. The midfielder epitomizes the quality of Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, Bangwe All Stars embodies the shambles of a scuffling team.

Meke Mwase’s men made life tough for themselves until they relied on a penalty strike to parachute them to safety. The Nomads will carry a 1-goal advantage going into the second leg scheduled for 19 this month at Mpira Stadium but the struggling Bangwe will hope to build from their second-half performance.

What was the halftime talk for Trevor Kajawa after conceding from the spot? Maybe it was a question that lingered in the minds of the matchgoers, looking at the performance of the team in the second half. “We told them that we have nothing to lose, let’s go to attack,” said the coach for Bangwe in the post-match reactions.

Starting the game on the front foot, the Nomads dropped their intensity in the last half and the coach attributed the team’s performance to the FIFA international break. “We lost momentum a little bit due to the break that we had but praise should go to the boys for the victory,” said Meke Mwase.

Winning one game in their last 11 matches is a record that forced the management to change the technical panel as Trevor Kajawa took over the helm this month after the team announced the departure of Yasin Rodgers.

Since beating Mzuzu City Hammers 8-0 in August, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have had struggles in scoring in their last four matches- 0-0 against Dedza Dynamos, 1-0 wins over Civil Service United and Kamuzu Barracks before another 1- 0 win over Bangwe on Sunday afternoon.

Mwase has been hardly making changes to his starting team, maintaining the bulk of his starting players with Cameroonian striker, Sama Tanjong Thierry holding up the main attacking position.

Though Trevor Kajawa opted for a double pivot of Wadada Msowoya and Nigerian, Ojomu Gbolahan but containing the pressure from Mighty Mukuru Wanderers’ versatile midfielders was a mountain to climb for Bangwe, they will have to wait for their first goal against the Nomads in all competitions.

Kajawa entrusted former Mighty Tigers and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets striker, Bright Bweke Munthali, Wanderers suffocated the visitors, routinely getting players around the ball. The decision to start with Bweke as the main striker didn’t pay any dividend and it was not surprising not to see him after the recess. Bangwe wanted to start brightly by using Richard Lapson on the right through the middle where Bweke was operating from. Their attacks landed in walls as Chaziya and Peter Cholopi epitomized the toughness of centre-halves.

It was a half of Nomads. They could have been 2-0, 3-0, 4-0 at the break but due to their profligacy, they were just 1-0 up at the recess. Sama Tanjong flashed his effort wide from close-range after seeing the initial attempt being thwarted by Ellias Missi.

Kajawa wanted his team to build from the back, but the boys couldn’t make it happen. Wanderers pressed. Singini lobbed the ball off Ojomu Gbolahan in midfield before setting up Sama Tanjong who beat Fanizo Mwansambo but his effort was too weak to trouble Missi.

Bangwe on the hoof, Wanderers kept on pressing. The first half flew by, the tempo high, some of the transitions dizzying. Kaliati’s rocket forced Missi to make a super save. Congested in the box, Bangwe conceded a controversial penalty. Kaliati coolly planted the ball past the keeper to give the Nomads a relief.

Kajawa couldn’t take his sit the whole game, he was eager to see his team ticking. Three changes were made just before the restart as James Msowoya, James Tambwali and Beston Jimu were all introduced for Sunganani Geoffrey, Ojumo Gbolahan and Bright Munthali.

James Msowoya, Felix Demakude all had efforts defended by Wanderers’ defenders inside 8 minutes into the second half. Bangwe’s decline is headlong. They finished 6th last season, this season they are off track. It wasn’t promising. Perhaps, they will use the home ground advantage, but they will need at least two goals without conceding, a tall order.

In a game dramatized by referees officiating without communication gadgets, there was miscommunication among the panel. Wanderers could have won another penalty in the second half, the referee decided to turn to deaf, Ellias Missi escaped from a possible red card for fouling Sama Tanjong, Chaziya escaped from a possible booking.

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers thought that Chaziya had extended the advantage after bundling home Stanley Sanudi’s inviting cross but it ruled out for offside. Francisco Madinga’s effort was cleared by Mwansambo just before it crossed the goal line.

  • 2 games, 0 points: What’s behind Malawi’s poor form?

    2 games, 0 points: What’s behind Malawi’s poor form?

The Malawi National Football team have suffered a 3-1 defeat against Burkina Faso in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, to make it two losses out of two opening matches.

Lassina Traore gave the host a two nil lead at half time after scoring a brace before Boureima Hassane Bande made it three midway in the second half. Flame’s consolation goal was scored by Zeliat Nkhoma.

With the result, Malawi are pointless at the bottom of group L. Their opponents, Burkina Faso have dislodged Senegal at the summit as the two sides are tied on four points while Burundi sits third with three points.

Here’s how I think the team is lacking right now

The only challenge with Malawian team is lack of quality in the squad, it’s a team full of average players who lacks technical abilities.

The team has a class problem as the players in today’s game continued to repeat same mistakes that costed us against Burundi last week.

    From defense, Midfield to strikers

The goalkeeper George Chikooka has conceded similar goals in the last two matches, as our opponents have been scoring while he advances inside. The main problem has been communication with fellow players as well as poor judgement of the balls coming towards his goal.

Same with the defense which is not learning from the past errors. Like what Nickson Mwase did against Burundi, failing to clear a cross, this has also happened with Lawrence Chaziya in Burkina Faso’s first goal. For the second one the two centerbacks lacked compactness, speed and stamina as they failed to tame a defence splitting pass before being overpowered and outpaced by Burkina Faso striker.

The fullbacks as well, were no longer helpful as they struggled both defensively and offensively.

And again, the midfield has had so many challenges. They’ve been loosing balls at dangerous positions. Today an error by Lloyd Aaron at the centre led to the opponents goal. The defence mostly has been exposed after being left uncovered. And for the attacking part of the midfield I don’t remember when was the last time our attacking central midfielder provided an assist. Strikers have not been fed enough for them to score.

You can blame whoever you want, but I think as a team we are not good enough to compete at international level, the better team won today.

  • Why FAM fine Dedza, Wanderers in Kamwendo’s transfer saga?

Why FAM fine Dedza, Wanderers in Kamwendo’s transfer saga?

Football Association of Malawi on Monday morning released the 17-paged verdict of the most-wanted striker, Promise Kamwendo’s transfer saga after a long wait. It was a case worth waiting for as a thorough investigation was needed before the Association made the decision.

The Coram of the hearing team consisted of Daud Mtanthiko,, who was the Chairperson, Counsel Khumbizeni Dossi, Counsel Kolezi Phir, i, and Davis Sado as members.

The Players’ Status Committee (PSC) completed the hearing of the case on August 20, and the parties involved were assured of being served with judgment in seven days. However, other circumstances impeded the PSC from walking their talks, and instead,, it took two weeks and four days to do it.

In August, during the mid-season transfer window, Kamwendo signed a three-year contract with Mighty Mukuru Wanderers after he had already agreed to personal terms with FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.

The People’s team had already paid Kamwendo’s transfer fee to Dedza Dynamos FC, amounting to MK3 Million, but on his unveiling day, he changed direction and joined the rival camp.

Bullets acted swiftly as they lodged a complaint to FAM asking for the suspension of the player’s registration with Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.

In their petition, Bullets demanded that the declaration should be made that the contract between Wanderers and Kamwendo was invalid, declaration should be made that they [Bullets] followed the right procedure in engaging Kamwendo’s former club Premier Bet Dedza Dynamos FC, before engaging the player.

Bullets were also demanding that the player be their employee, and they wanted FAM to declare that Kamwendo’s move to Wanderers was invalid saying the conduct of all the Respondents border on theft, fraud, deceit and dishonesty and the same should be condemned by FAM by ordering both the player and Wanderers to pay the fine to the Football Association of Malawi.

Alternatively, Bullets wanted a declaration that if Kamwendo did not want to work and play for them, then Dedza Dynamos FC should immediately pay the sum of K3,000,000.00 (Three million kwacha).

They also wanted Wanderers to pay K3,000,000.00 (three million kwacha) being exemplary damages payable for bringing the game of football into disrepute.

Responding to Bullets’ petition, Wanderers denied all the allegations, and they were demanding Fifty Million Kwacha damages for bringing the game of football into disrepute, Fifty Million Kwacha damages for attempting to induce a breach of contract between the player and Mighty Mukuru Wanders FC Limited.

The Nomads were also demanding Fifty Million Kwacha being damages for loss of use of the player’s

services and Fifty Million Kwacha damages for pain, suffering, inconvenience, and stress endured by the 4th respondent’s Team Manager, Mr Steven Madeira, for being summoned and detained at Blantyre Police Station at the instance of the employee agents and/or servants of Bullets, Fifty Million Kwacha damages for violation and denial of the right to work.

Releasing the judgment, PSC has communicated that the player should return to Dedza as his move to Wanderers was illegal and slapped Mighty Mukuru Wanderers and Dedza Dynamos with fines.

“The existing contract between the Dedza Dynamos and Promise Kamwendo is still running. Kamwendo remains contracted to Dedza and must return to the club immediately” reads part of the statement

The player has also been ordered to refund the money amounting to K6,000,000 paid to him by Wanderers.

PSC said the Petition of Big Bullets and the cross-petition of Mighty Wanderers this far are partially successful. Any further declarations contained in the petition were dismissed.

    Why Dedza, Wanderers were fined

The Football Association of Malawi has slapped Mighty Mukuru Wanderers with an MK4 Million fine, saying it was imperative to address a serious violation in the matter.

The 4th respondent [Wanderers], fully aware of the regulations governing player transfers and contracts, knowingly entered into a contract with the 3rd [Kamwendo] respondent despite the absence of an agreement with the 1st respondent [Dedza Dynamos].

“This action represents a blatant and egregious breach of the rules, which are designed to maintain order and prevent such conflicts. The 4th respondent’s [Wanderers] disregard for these regulations is both alarming and unacceptable.

“Actions of this nature, akin to those of the 1st respondent [Dedza], tarnish the integrity of the game of football. Consequently, in response to this serious infraction, the committee

imposes a fine of K4,000,000 on the 4th respondent [Wanderers],” adds the verdict.

Dedza Dynamos has been fined MK3 Million to FAM for bringing the game of football into disrepute for being the primary cause of the conflict between Bullets and Wanderers regarding the transfer of the player.

“It is particularly perplexing that the 1st respondent [Dedza Dynamos] accepted payment from the Petitioner [Bullets], only to provide banking details to the 4th

respondent [Wanderers] two days later and subsequently accepted a payment from them for the same player, a situation for which they had already received compensation.

“This behavior confounds the committee and is absolutely a conduct that should not be tolerated. Such conduct has brought the integrity of football into serious disrepute,” adds the petition.

FAM has asked the parties to challenge the verdict within three days from 8th September 2024.

Meanwhile, Dedza Dynamos Chief Executive Officer Frella Chimango Kulemero said the Club has learned the judgment with shock, but they will take time before making the decision.

On their part, both FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers Chief Executive Officers Albert Chigoga and Panganeni Ndovi, respectively, said they are still digesting the verdict, and they will announce their stances.

  • FAILED PROMISE! Kamwendo’s move to Wanderers nullified

FAILED PROMISE! Kamwendo’s move to Wanderers nullified

Striker Promise Kamwendo has reportedly been ordered to return to Dedza Dynamos after his controversial move to Mighty Mukuru Wanderers.

In August, during mid season transfer window, Kamwendo signed a three-year-contract with Mighty Mukuru Wanderers, after he had already agreed personal terms with FCB Nyasa Big Bullets.

The People’s team had already paid Kamwendo’s transfer fee to Dedza Dynamos FC, but on his unveiling day he changed direction and joined rivalry camp.

This angered FCB Nyasa Big Bullets who opted for legal redress, as they took the matter to Football Association of Malawi who later referred it to the Players Status Committee for resolution.

The four-week wait has come to an end today’s as the Association’s Player’s status Committee has communicated that the player should return to Dedza as his move to Wanderers was illegal.

FAM has also indicated that the agreement between the FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Dedza Dynamos is unenforceable.

Further more, the committee has also ordered Dedza Dynamos to refund the money received from FCB Nyasa Big Bullets and Mighty Mukuru Wanderers amounting to K3,000,000 and K4,000,000 respectively.

According to FAM, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers have been found guilty of bleaching FIFA-FAM contractual terms and have also been charged.

“Mighty Mukuru Wanderers is hereby ordered to pay a fine of MK4,000,000.00 within 14 clear days of this ruling”

Dedza Dynamos have also been been condemned to a fine amounting to MK3,000,000.00.

The Football Association of Malawi has indicated that all charges much be paid within 14 clear days for this rulling.

BDNC, GM Plastics hail “Player of the Week” partnership

Blantyre District Netball League Committee and GM Plastics Limited have all hailed their partnership for the Player of the Week award being awarded to outstanding players in Rainbow Paint Netball League.

Blantyre District Netball Association in July unveiled the sponsorship worthy MK1 Million from GM Plastics Industry Limited which would see the company pumping MK50,000 to Rainbow Paints Player of the Week as well as products.

GM Plastics Marketer Victor Emment said the partnership has helped in the visibility of the company and brand recognition. He added that the company is considering engaging other businesses or organizations that are involved in sporting activities.

“The partnership has helped in aligning our brand with a popular local sports league, it has boosted visibility and brand recognition within the country. As fans and participants engage with the award, they are also exposed to our company’s name and reputation.

“Secondly, sponsoring the Player of the Week award has likely generated positive publicity and goodwill for our company. Supporting local sports not only showcases a commitment to the country but also establishes a positive association with qualities such as teamwork, dedication, and excellence – attributes that can reflect positively on our brand image,” he said.

Anne Hanjahanja, General Secretary for Blantyre District Netball Committee said the sponsorship has been a huge motivation for the players and it has helped in raising the standards of netball.

“It [the partnership] has improved [the standards of netball] a lot. Every player is now working harder than before in order to get the award thereby improving our league,” she said.

Hanjahanja said there are chances that the deal could be extended beyond the current contract but no talks have started yet about extension.

“Not yet [about contract extension], but they [GM Plastics] said up end of league. Hopeful. Recently they have increased number of dishes from 5 to 8. More players are benefitting hence the stiff competition,” she added.

Since the start of the partnership, five players have won the award, receiving a whopping MK250, 000 in total. First Choice Tigresses’ trio of Awema Chikaonda, Tendai Masamba, Esther Phiri of Giants NC and Palichi Mzumala of CHILEKa Sisters are the ones who have won the award so far.

  • Mabedi speaks on Chester’s substitution which displeased fans

Mabedi speaks on Chester’s substitution which displeased fans

There was heavy altercation from fans at the Bingu National Stadium, when Patrick Mabedi decided to take off Yamikani Chester in the 64th minute of Flame’s 3-2 loss to Burundi.

At that point, Malawi were 2-1 behind in their 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifiers opener, as the coach decided to take off one of the busiest players in field.

However, when the substitution board showed that Yamikani Chester and Chimwemwe Idana were supposed to be replaced by Patrick Mwaungulu and Robert Saizi, there was heavy noisy from fans, expressing their frustration and discontent over the decision.

Thought it looked the decision might change after being delayed for some minutes, but later Mabedi maintained his decision to replace the duo with the foreign based attackers.

Meanwhile, the decision proved justified six minutes later when Malawi equalized, but hopes of getting something were dented after conceding late to suffer a 3-2 defeat.

After the match, Mabedi explained why he and his coaching staff made that decision.

“Actually, we see the game differently, supporters and us as the technical team. As we see Chester he had a good game but tactically from first half you could see when he gets the ball, he was cutting inside before losing it and sometimes he was ending up in Lanjesi area [left side], overloading it, leaving his side vacant”

“And again, you could see in the second half he started to lose a little bit of endurance, he started to be tired so we thought of putting somebody who we thought he could take the opponents in wide areas and put crosses, the way we scored the second goal”

“So it was tactical we wanted to have two wingers to keep pressing the wide areas and then send crosses so that we can balance our attacking”

Chester made a return to the national team after a spell of sidelines for what Mabedi described as “ageing and different style of play to his philosophy”.

Mabedi drops 8 players from Mali trip

Patrick Mabedi has dropped 8 players from the squad that is traveling to Mali and expected to face Burkina Faso on Tuesday next week.

The Head Coach, Mabedi has dropped the only Left Back, Precious Sambani from his squad which means Gomezgani Chirwa remains the favorite candidate for the position in the next assignment.

Mabedi has also dropped Silver Strikers’ midfielders, Uchizi Vunga, Chikondi Kamanga, defender, Maxwell Paipi, FCB Nyasa Big Bullets’ duo of Nixon Nyasulu and Wongani Lungu, Mighty Mukuru Wanderers’ attacker, Gaddie Chirwa.

CRECK Sporting Club’s goal-keeper, Charles Chisale who received a late call-up to replace injured Brighton Munthali has also been dropped, leaving George Chikooka and Innocent Nyasulu as the only options for Mabedi.

Flames were beaten by Burundi 3-2 on Thursday at home and they are hoping to beat Burkina Faso in Bamako next week to bring the journey back alive.

The first group of the Flames left Malawi through Kamuzu International Airport. • Analysis: Burundi capitalize on Mabedi’s team set-up to swallow Flames

Analysis: Burundi capitalize on Mabedi’s team set-up to swallow Flames

It was a heavy blow not only to Patrick Mabedi’s hopes of keeping his job intact, but also to Malawi’s hopes of returning to an African prestigious tournament.

Malawi will have to travel to Mali to face Burkina Faso but odds are against them to grind results, another defeat will likely put the coach’s job under threat.

Just when it seemed as if Malawi kicked off their campaign in the African Cup of Nations Qualifiers with a point, a big damage occurred.

Faces down, “coach must go” rumbles. A defeat that was arguably caused by the coach as his players made individual errors. Burundi snatched a late 86th-minute winner which in the end, they deserved.

“Very bad result, the play was not good, we were not ourselves to be honest, and the combination was not good at the back.

“We could not coordinate very well, sometimes it is difficult just to practice things, we were struggling in terms of defence in terms of combination to go forward.

“You could see other goals we gave away. We need to take it and move on, no need to complain. It was not what we planned, we had a bad game. If you don’t prepare, this is the result,” said Mabedi.

The team scored two goals, the team swallowed three goals. Mabedi’s post-match reaction was contrary to how the game unfolded.

A defensive set-up haunted the team

Internet sources say that Dennis Chembezi’s last competitive match was in June when Flames lost 1-0 to Equatorial Guinea, he was in the heart of defence on Thursday partnering with Nixon Mwase.

It was a lackluster performance for the home side as they failed to record a back-to-back win at home.

Mabedi’s men would hope to end the way they started. It was a promising start to the game by the hosts who invited Burundi’s defence to the task.

Lanjesi Nkhoma, Yamikani Chester and Mphasi combined before the latter fired his effort against the body of the defender.

Exchanging passes within the first defensive line wasn’t a model of play that Malawians would demand, they were at home.

Burundi were absorbing Malawi’s pressure before catching them on the break. Jean Girumugisha agonizingly his effort over the bar after beating two players.

Wasteful in the first minutes of the game, shaky towards the end of the game.

Patrick Mabedi is not responsible for the timing of the team’s camping, but having one training session was inevitable, Burundi too didn’t have enough time to prepare for the game.

Malawi cannot discount this as an aberration. They have suffered two defeats in their last three games and both defeats this year have been reminiscent of losses last in previous years and the buck stops with a coach the new leadership was reluctant to keep.

Malawi instead of vomiting first, they swallowed first as Chimwemwe Idana turned to his own goal from failing to clear a corner-kick.

The coach can get the blame for the defeat, but the two teams also differ in the quality of players.

Matteo Nkuruzinza started in goals, he plays for RWG Molebeek in Belgium, Shaban Hussein plays for AS Kigali in Rwanda, Jean Giramugisha plays for Al Hilal in South Sudan, Saidi Ntibazonzika plays for Simba SC in Tanzania, Yousouf Ndayishimiye plays for Nice FC in France Tresor Mossi plays for SumQayit in Azerbaijan just to mention a few. It wasn’t a thin line that separated the two teams.

Though scorelines favoured the visitors at the break, Malawi won stats. Malawi scored just one goal with five shots on target, 6 corners and 11 shots in total against Burundi’s 1, 1 and 5 respectively.

After the visitors took the lead, Malawi fought back to level up scores and Chawangwa Kaonga’s free-kick deflected off the human wall to beat Nkuruzinza.

The team waned out as Burundi restored their lead just five minutes later as Jean Giramugisha tapped home a very beautiful ball from the right after a team move.

Lloyd Banega Aaron got a 7.0 rating from Flashscore, marking him the third better Flames player in the game behind Yamikani Chester and Chawangwa Kaonga.

However, playing him deeper in a single pivot midfield was an advantage to the visitors. Chimwemwe Idana was number 8, Nkhoma was number 10 in an unrecognizable formation, whether 4-4-2 or 4-2-4- or 4-3-3 or 3-5-2.

The loads were too heavy for Banega. The distance between players in midfield was big. He is not that kind of midfielder who can dictate the game by playing long passes.

His mistake allowed the visitors to find a space into the attacking third before sitting Stanley Sanudi down but the effort rattled inside of the post early in the second half.

The parallels with the annus horribilis extended to the crowd’s reaction to a substitution. Patrick Mabedi made his first substitution, Robert Saizi and Patrick Mwaungulu came on for Yamikani Chester and Chimwemwe Idana, fans protested.

“[Yamikani] Chester had a grand game, tactically you could see when he gets the ball he goes inside and loses it, or ends up failing to give Lanjesi which means we overloaded one side.

“We looked at the technical way…that’s why we changed by putting somebody. Also he started to be tired, so we looked at if we had crosses we can utilize and get a goal,” responded Mabedi when pressed on hooking off Costol De Sol’s attacker.

Four minutes later, Patrick Mwangulu had his impact felt in the game. “He is not a player to watch the game from the bench,” screamed supporters.

The two players who have just signed for TP Mazembe, combined to bring parity. Lanjesi Nkhoma pounced on Mwaungulu’s cross to head the ball against the grass before it hit the back of the net.

Mwaungulu nearly grabbed the third goal for Malawi but his effort agonizingly missed the right post of Nkuruzinza. Malawi looked likely to snatch the winner but Burundi did as Gome and his Goalkeeper, George Chikooka failed to communicate properly.

    Left-back experimentation continues at Flames

From his squad call-up, he shut supporters and journalists during one of his pre-match interviews. “If you are an engineer, be an engineer.”

His 28-man squad had only one left back, Precious Sambani who also watched the game from the bench seeing someone struggling to do what he knows better.

Sambani was one of the best performing players when FCB Nyasa Big Bullets beat Zambia’s Champions Red Arrows in the first leg of the Caf Champions League Preliminary Round, but Mabedi says Malawi doesn’t have left backs.

“We have a problem in this country, we don’t have left backs, you could see we have Tatenda M’balaka injured, we don’t have anyone who we can train with just a day, we thought of somebody who played in that position, so we saw Gome played at Afcon before and was doing well at the left, that was the reason we played him there,” he said.

Mabedi named three Right Backs in his squad and One Left back. From 2021 to date, 8 players have been experimented in that position.

Precious Sambani, Gomezgani Chirwa, Dan Chimbalanga, Mark Fodya, Joseph Balakasi, Wisdom Mpinganjira , Alick Lungu, Tatenda M’balaka all have played at least a game for the National Team.

Out of three goals that Malawi conceded, two of them came from the left back position. Something to think about.
