Ballot papers for Mwasa and Chilaweni by-elections arrive

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Justice Annabel Mtalimanja today led a delegation to Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe to witness the arrival of ballot papers for Mwasa and Chilaweni wards by-elections slated for 23 July 2024.

The Mwasa ward in Mangochi North East and Chilaweni Ward in Blantyre Rural East Constituency became vacant following the death’s of the then councillors, Edna Yusuf and Carlo Mdala respectively.

Mtalimanja said the ballot papers are to be dispatched today to Njewa warehouse until 19 July when materials for Chilaweni will be taken to Mapazi TDC while for Mwasa to Mangochi Municipality.

The total number of boxes received for the two wards is 15000 according to a packing list prepared by Al Ghurair Printing and Publishing of United Arab Emirates.

“We are happy that the ballot papers and polling materials are now here and this goes to the readiness of the polls set for the 23rd July in Chilaweni and Mwasa ward”

“In total we have received 15000 ballot papers, 11000 for Chilaweni ward and 4000 for Mwasa ward” said Mtalimanja

Political parties whose candidates are contesting in the by-elections were present to witness the arrival of ballot papers at KIA.

According to Mtalimanja, the ballots will be distributed to the polling stations on 21st July where party representatives will be allowed to verify.
