In the corridors of Malawi’s political arena, the atmosphere is thick with anticipation.

The sudden passing of Vice President Saulos Chilima has left a significant void, and President Lazarus Chakwera faces the pressing task of appointing a new Vice President within seven days, that is according to the Malawi Law Society.

This decision is not merely a constitutional mandate but a pivotal moment that will shape the future of the nation and particularly the outcome of the 2025 tripartite elections.

Political analysts and citizens alike are keenly speculating on who will step into this critical role. Among the names emerging as potential candidates are seasoned politicians, influential figures from various regions, and even unexpected contenders from outside the expected political sphere.

Chancellor College political scientist Professor Boniface Dulani offers his perspective on the President’s decision-making process.

He believes the President will be looking for an individual who can help him boost his share of the vote in the 2025 elections, especially considering the 50%+1 requirement.

“However, the smarter thing to do would be to select an individual who can help the President govern effectively between now and the next elections. Someone who can help the President quickly overcome the many socio-economic and governance challenges the country is facing, thereby convincing the wider Malawi electorate that he is deserving of their vote again in September 2025.” Said Dulani.

The Front-Runners: Analyzing the Key Contenders

Patricia Kaliati-The Powerhouse

Patricia Kaliati, the dynamic Secretary General of the United Transformation Movement (UTM), stands as a formidable contender. Widely popular and deeply rooted in the party of the late Vice President, Kaliati’s influence extends far beyond her political duties.

Known for her outspoken advocacy for gender equality and social justice, she is a beacon of hope for many feminists and gender rights activists.

Kaliati’s appointment would not only stabilize the shaky Tonse Alliance but also send a strong message about the administration’s commitment to gender equality.

Dr. Joseph Chidanti Malunga– The Intellectual

Dr. Joseph Chidanti Malunga, currently the Chief Executive of the Tobacco Commission, brings a blend of intellectual rigor and practical experience.

With a background as a lecturer at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Malunga’s academic achievements and professional acumen make him a respected figure.

His roots in the Lower Shire, a politically significant region, add to his appeal.

Malunga’s expertise and regional influence could be crucial in consolidating support in the south.

Dr. Michael Usi– The Popular Artist

Known for his artistic background and current role as Minister of Natural Resources and Climate Change, Dr. Michael Usi is a unique figure in the political landscape.

His fame as a musician and television actor has garnered him a large following, making him a relatable and trusted public figure.

Usi’s widespread popularity and proven governance experience make him a safe yet impactful choice.

Strategic Picks from the Malawi Congress Party

The President is not compelled to make his appointment from the UTM, the party of the late Vice President. He may very well choose to select the Vice President from among the MCP stalwarts.

This strategic decision could bolster his administration’s stability and reinforce the Malawi Congress Party’s influence, potentially strengthening the President’s position as he navigates the political landscape leading up to the 2025 elections.

By choosing a candidate from within the MCP, the President could aim to consolidate his base and leverage the party’s established network and resources to address the pressing socio-economic and governance challenges facing Malawi.

Catherine Gotani Hara– The Northern Star

As the Speaker of the National Assembly, Catherine Gotani Hara wields significant influence. Her leadership and strong ties to the Northern region, often seen as a political kingmaker, make her a strategic choice. The region’s support could be vital for the MCP’s success in the 2025 elections.

Gotani Hara’s appointment could bolster the MCP’s presence in the north, an area crucial for electoral success.

Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba– The Rising Star

Recently welcomed into the MCP fold, Engineer Vitumbiko Mumba has quickly become a name to watch. His technical expertise and youthful energy have sparked interest and speculation about his ambitions within the party. While his exact role remains uncertain, his presence signals a potential shift towards a more dynamic and innovative leadership approach.

Mumba’s entry into the MCP has certainly stirred the political waters, indicating a potential reshuffle and fresh leadership dynamics.

The Dark Horses: Unexpected Contenders

Abida Sidik Mia– The Southern Powerhouse

Representing Chikwawa Nkombezi as a Member of Parliament and serving as the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Abida Sidik Mia is a prominent figure in the Lower Shire. Her financial resources and political clout make her a formidable candidate who could enhance the MCP’s appeal in the south.

Mia’s combination of influence and resources makes her a strong contender who could significantly impact the political balance in the south.

Mary Chilima– The Emotional Choice
Amidst the political heavyweights, an unexpected name has emerged—Mary Chilima, the widow of the late Vice President.

Her appointment would be seen as a tribute to her husband’s legacy and could resonate deeply with the electorate on an emotional level.

Selecting Mary Chilima could be a unifying and empathetic choice, honoring the late Vice President’s memory.

Some unexpected contenders have also emerged.

These include Vera Kamtukule, the current Minister of Tourism, recognized for her dedicated service and experience in her field.

Another potential candidate is Atupele Muluzi, a prominent political figure and son of former President Bakili Muluzi.

Although he is has a strong relationship with the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), Muluzi’s candidacy could potentially help the MCP gain support in the eastern region and bring additional experience and support to the administration.
