Minister of Education Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima says she is delighted with the progress which Education sector has registered in the past academic year.
Kambauwa-Wirima said this today in Lilongwe, in her opening remarks to the Annual Education Joint Sector Review (JSR) Meeting.
The two-day meeting which will run until tomorrow, Wednesday under the theme ‘Education for Impact’, is aimed at fostering dialogue, sharing insights and catalyzing action for the advancement of Malawi’s education sector.
In her remarks, Kambauwa-Wirima mentioned about the primary school enrollment which has increased as one of the achievements in the just ended year.
She further attributed the achievement to good collaboration with different stakeholders and partners in the Education Sector.
“We have looking at school feeding program and WFP, UNICEF and other partners that we are working with currently, CARE has also joined in”
“We are making great progress in terms of students that are being provided with meals. Primary enrollment has reached 5.42 million” said Kambauwa-Wirima.
The Minister also mentioned the increased number of operational child Development Centres, as another success in the just ended year.
Additionally she also revealed that the Secondary bursary provision to vulnerable students was increased.
Meanwhile, despite the successes, Kambauwa-Wirima said there have been some challenges encountered on the way.
“We have challenges regarding to digital infrastructure and resource quality. There’s also challenges in potable water particularly to private schools as only 66% have access to it”.
The meeting is bringing together key stakeholders, including Government officials and policymakers, representatives from educational institutions, development partners and agencies, members of the diplomatic corps, Civil society organizations and the private sector leaders in education.
