The opposition UTM, has punched holes in the Commission of Inquiry’s report on the plane crash that killed Malawi vice president Saulos Chilima and seven others in Chikangawa in June this year.
Released this past weekend, the party, whose leader then was Chilima, said the report fails to address critical issues that could provide Malawians with full understanding of what transpired.
A statement signed by UTM secretary general Willet Karonga said among others, UTM said the report failed to identify individuals who were part of the search team and were the first to arrive at the crash site, give reasons why the search was prematurely called off, details on pre-crash fatalities and injuries and absence of toxicology testing.
“The report fails to explain why morticians were allowed to clean the bodies before autopsies were done. This act risks destroying vital forensic evidence and raises serious questions. Who authorized this directive, and for what purpose? Why did the Commission failed to investigate and hold accountable those responsible for this critical lapse?
“The inconsistencies and falsehoods in statements made by the Malawi Defence Force (MOP) the government to the public through the press are deeply troubling. These contradictions undermine public confidence in the official narrative and suggest a potential cover-up,” reads part of the statement
