United General Insurance Company (UGI) has committed K8 million to reward 38 top-performing students at the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHES) for the 2023/2024 academic year.

The recipients, from the Schools of Medicine, Oral Health, Nursing, Sciences, and Global and Public Health, earned a place on the Dean’s List after achieving distinctions of 75 percent and above.

Speaking during the awards presentation ceremony on Friday, UGI Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Grant Mwenechanya, said the awards underline the company’s commitment to building a healthier Malawi.

“Doctors and other medical professionals are vital for a healthy nation. As a company, we also depend on healthy employees, which is why we found it important to fund these awards,” said Mwenechanya.

Chairperson of the KUHES School Deans, Professor John Phuka, said the recognition boosts student morale and drives excellence.

“This initiative not only rewards hard work but also inspires future health professionals to aim higher and serve the nation with dedication,” said Phuka.

One of the awardees, Shiv Patel, a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) student, described the recognition as a major motivator.

“It feels rewarding to see our efforts acknowledged. This motivates me to keep pushing and contribute meaningfully to Malawi’s health sector,” said Patel.

The prizes included cash awards of K300,000, K200,000, and K150,000.
