A Pre-conference of Parties (COP28) summit at Bunda College in Lilongwe, has highlighted the importance of including children and the youth in decision making processes on matters of climate change in the country.
The two day summit was conducted under the theme, “Nurturing hope in the face of climate lose and damage”.
Speaking at the summit on Thursday, Vice Chancellor for Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar), Professor Emmanuel Kaunda said the youth bear the longest burden of climate change, hence the need to involve them.
“We want the youth to have a voice at COP28 as their future is equally involved. We formulated a number of programmes with regards to nature so that young people take the lead in managing natural resources,” said Kaunda.
In his remarks, Senior Advocacy Campaign and Media Manager at Save the Children, John Chipeta said climate change crisis continues to be a challenge, hence their involvement to reduce it’s effects.
“As CSOs, we ensure to intervene with humanitarian aid to people affected in times of disasters. We are also working to influence policies in government with regards to climate change,” said Chipeta
Cementing on the matter, National Coordinator for National Youth Network on Climate Change, Dominic Nyasulu described the summit as an important platform for the youth.
