The Southern Africa Trust has expressed the need of incorporating women in activities towards climate mitigation and adaptation.
The Trust’s Chief Executive Officer Alice D Kanengoni said women shoulder the burden of climate change effects, hence they are a very important stakeholder in the fight.
“For us at Southern Africa Trust we have a gender justice program which works across all other themes such as the climate change and natural resource governance, but we made a deliberate decision to also have a standalone gender justice program, precisely to address the problems I have cited. We should raise a generation which will respect women in all aspects.” She said.
Aliana Kamanga a resident of Area 43 in Lilongwe said “Men and Women relate to the environment differently, and environmental changes have different impacts on their lives.
“Women play a critical role in sustaining communities and managing natural resources, but their contributions are often undervalued and neglected. I support the idea of enhancing gender-sensitive information and services,” she said
Southern Africa Trust strives to strengthen the voice and agency of poor people in policy processes to reduce poverty and inequality in southern Africa.
