By George Mhango:
So Send I you Ministry Malawi Chapter on Tuesday donated various food relief items to 200 Cyclone Freddy victims in Chiradzulu District in the Southern Region.
This followed news that some victims around Chanza and Mayiwa primary schools in the district have not yet been reached out to by government and humanitarian organisations.
President of So Send I you Ministry in Malawi, Reverend Mackford Chipuliko, who made the donation alongside his ministry partners expressed shock at the devastation in the district, saying more need support is still needed.
He, however, urged the 185 victims, who are still accommodated at Chanza Primary School Camp and another 100 victims at Mayiwa Primary, that they should use the items properly.
“We told our partners in the USA about how people need help and so, they responded to our call, hence the donation to alleviate their suffering,” he said.
Reverend Chipuliko hinted that other organisations should also come in and help considering that there is more dire need for additional support.
Camp Chair at Chanza Primary Austin Maloya said close to 13 people died on the spot and other 16 people still missing due to Cyclone Freddy which happened between 14 and 17 March, 2023.
“We appreciate So Send I You Ministry Malawi for the help. However, we are still at the camp because houses collapsed and we have nowhere to go,” Maloya said.
So Send I You is one of the many organisations that have pumped in their material, food and financial resources to help those affected by the cyclone in March 2023.
The ministry also made a similar donation to the people of Makata in Ndirande Township in Blantyre, who were also affected by the cyclone.
President Lazarus Chakwera recently, said 1002 people died due to Cyclone Freddy which affected 10 districts, Chiradzulu being one of them in the South of Malawi.
