The list of teams who have qualified for the quarterfinals of Goshen City Women’s Championship is now complete after wins for Silver Strikers Ladies and Civil Service Women.

The Bankers were the first to qualify after thumping CY Sisters from Mzuzu 16-0 in an early kick-off before Civil’s 1-0 win over Mighty Wanderers Queens, both games at Bingu National Stadium, Monday.

“It’s been a great day, we have witnessed great performance from the players, and iam happy that we have produced quarterfinalists”

“I’m also happy with today’s commendable patronage, we’ve seen a lot of spectators like mens football” said Adelaide Migogo, Chairperson of the National Women’s Football Association.

What happened?

MERCILESS BANKERS

Capital City giants Silver Strikers Ladies utterly humiliated CY Sisters with an extraordinary 16-0 demolition job that sent them through into the quarter-finals of the Goshen City Women’s Championship.

Part of the action

A haul of goals from Deborah Henry, a brace from Chikondi Gondwe and a goal each from Linda Manda and Madyina Nguluwe gave rampant Silver Strikers Ladies an emphatic 8-0 lead at half time.

After the recess, the Bankers continued where they stopped, doubling their first half score-line with Henry adding other four goals to complete a snowman.

There were two hat-tricks in the game as Madyina Nguluwe added two goals to her first half strike, so too was Chikondi Gondwe who registered a second half goal, adding to her first half brace, with Chisomo Banda also appeared on the score sheet with a goal.

“It wasn’t an easy game despite winning by a huge margin but thanks to my players for adhering to what we told them” said Andrew Chikhosi, head coach for Silver Strikers Ladies.

His counterpart, Aaron Kamanga conceded the game was too big for his team.

“Let me accept this defeat, if you could see we have a very youthful players, they failed live up to the level of this game, the ground was too huge for them, we failed to adapt. Another factor is that we are hit with injuries, most of my first team players are out injured that’s why we struggled a lot today” said Kamanga

MIGHTY FALL

Mighty Mukuru Wanderers queens have been dumped out of the competition following a 1-0 loss to Civil Service Women in a late kick-off match.

The Servants dominated the game from the start and forced Wanderers goalie Esther Maulidi into saves.

The Collins Pofera’s side took the lead on 34 minutes through Bernadetter Nyenga’s excellent finish inside the box, handing the Servants a goal that proved to be the match-winner.

The Albert Mpinganjira’s ladies endured a difficult afternoon as the Area 9 outfit restricted them to make any attempt on goal in the entire match.

“I told my players to put much effort today and we saw that happening, they really worked tirelessly in the entire match, that’s the secret behind our success today” said Civil’s Collins Pofera’s.

Nomads’ Albert Mpinganjira admitted that some mistakes by his ladies costed them the game.

“It was just a good game, the ladies tried their best but we failed to make it, we need to accept that our mistakes costed us the game” said Mpinganjira

Whats next

The week-long event will proceed tomorrow with two quarterfinal matches between Ascent Academy facing defending champions Kukoma Ntopwa Women’s in a repeat of last year’s final which Ntopwa won on post-match penalties.

Later, 2022 champions FCB Nyasa Big Bullets will take on MDF Lioness.

The other two quarterfinals will be played on Wednesday where Civil Women will take on MK Academy while Moyale Sisters will face Silver Strikers ladies.

The semifinal will take place on Friday with the third place playoff and final slated for Sunday.
