Senior Chief Malemia of Zomba has condemned dressing of party colours during government functions and has since ordered this to stop with immediate effect.
Speaking during the opening of Songani Market, Malemia said he was disturbed to see a number of people wearing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and Malawi Congress Party (MCP) regalia at a function that was purely government.
“I have a very important message to make today; I have noticed a growing tendency of people wearing party colours during government functions. Please let us differentiate a party function from that of government and dress differently.
“As a chief of this area, am really worried and I don’t want to this to stop henceforth,”Malemia said.
Surprisingly, many people within the gathering clapped hands in agreement with the chiefs concern.
“That is very true and it is embarrassing,” some people were overheard murmuring.
Member of Parliament for Zomba Malosa, Grace Kwelepeta agreed with the chief and asked supporters to respect the directive.
Kwelepeta also called for unity among party supporters, saying politics is not about creating enmity but rather working together to develop the country.
Minister of Local Government, Blessings Chinsinga said unity of purpose was necessary to foster development, adding that it was important for people to put party differences aside and jointly support government development agenda.
