Reverend Maurice Munthali has resigned as President Lazarus Chakwera’s Special Advisor on Peace ,Reconciliation and National Unity citing massive corruption as the main reason.

In his memorundum to Chakwera dated March 1, 2023, Munthali said he reached at the decision after he deeply and prayerfully reflected on his official role and personal participation in the prevailing governance atmosphere marred by persistent corruption allegations and related scandals.

“I am sapiently troubled in my conscience to continue in the position you graciously appointed me into. consequently. To be forthright. Your Excellency, our word on the myriad of governance issues rocking the country has hitherto fallen short of such appropriate or adequate action as would give assurance and hope to Malawians that things will get better soon enough.

“To this end and despite the great gains we have made so far against some external forces beyond our control. I personally feel that as government we haven’t provided the type of leadership and or direction that would meet the hopes of Malawians for a better life in the foreseeable future.

“I have resolved at a personal level that the prevailing circumstances do not evenly sit with my calling as a man of faith and the benign intentions I shared with the people in accepting to take up the advisory role.

“I shall always remain profoundly grateful to Your Excellency for entrusting me with the noble responsibility of being your Advisor. I am acutely aware that there are so many and even better others in this country who could have been appointed into this position.

“It is my fervent prayer that God’s grace will be abundant for you personally and the entire government machinery so that the corruption vice and the multiple inefficiencies rocking our Government will be dealt with decisively and squarely,” he said
