The Red-Li Mipuniro Project yesterday organised a two day workshop for athletes from different sports disciplines as one way of boosting sports in the country.

This is one of the many trainings that will be organised under the Red-Li Mipuniro Project as one way of not only fostering sports but also maintaining discipline both on and off the field. The training, which took place at Bingu International Stadium (BNS) was sponsored by the Anita White Fund through the International Working Group (IWG) on Women and Sports.

The Red-Li Mipuniro Project which is being headed by Paida Mpaso is one of the 20 receipts of the Anita White Fund.

The funding has been made available to enable women who have successfully completed leadership programmes to advance the women and sport movement in their countries, regions or organisations. This fund is to honour Dr Anita White’s leadership of the international women and sport movement and her role in role in establishing the IWG.

One of the facilitators, Technical officer for Olympa Africa, Chisomo Magalasi welcomed the training and described it carefully moulded as it suited the current issues within the sports arena.

“We need trainings that are related to current events and this training was perfect as it highlighted such.  There is a lot that has been happening to our women in sports, issues of sexual harassment; lack of fair play; lack of professionalism just to mention a few and I am glad that such issues were discussed,” she said.

Other issues that the athletes were drilled on included: on safeguarding and sports for development; aspects of fair play; respect for opponents.

One of the participants, Blue Eagles Netball Player, Thoko Makunganya welcomed the training and said it has been an eye opener for her.

“Such trainings are very important because they guide us through sports, imagine this could be my second training in five years. However, we need such trainings at least three times a year as sports keeps on evolving,” she said.

Some of the sports disciplines that took part included: Netball; Football; boxing; volleyball; table tennis and basketball.
