Police in Lilongwe are keeping in custody at least 40 people for defying a court order by proceeding holding ant-judiciary demonstrations despite the high court granting an order restraining them.
Lilongwe Police spokesperson Hastings Chigalu has confirmed the development.
Chigalu says the suspects have been charged with contempt of court and unlawful assembly.
Among those arrested include Kingsley Mpaso, Phunziro Mvula, Billy Banda, Jonathan Phiri, Victor Nyenyeliwa, Harale Aubrey, Edward Kambenje and Chimwemwe Mphepo.
Chigalu has meanwhile dismissed social media reports that a police officer has been killed during the protests.
The demonstrators are staging what are calling ant-judiciary demonstrations arguing there is selective justice in the administration of justice in the country’s court.
