The Leader of Opposition in Parliament (LoP) George Chaponda, has lambasted government for its handling of the passport crisis, calling it a “man-made disaster” caused by “incompetence and negligence”.
Speaking at a press conference yesterday, Chaponda condemned the riot at the Immigration offices, but blamed the government for failing to address the issue despite repeated warnings.
Chaponda accused cabinet ministers of prioritizing their political convention over the crisis, and criticized the lack of accountability at the Department of Immigration.
“The government’s inability to manage the affairs of the state is clear. It’s time for them to take responsibility and find solutions.”
The passport crisis has left thousands of Malawians stranded, with many unable to travel for business, education, and medical care.
The government has yet to respond to Chaponda’s criticisms.
Meanwhile, Central West Region Police Headquarters deputy public relations officer, Sub Inspector Foster Benjamin has said they have arrested six people on charges of inciting violence, malicious damage, and endangering the life of people traveling by the road
He identified the six as Alinafe Nyalugwe, 36, Memory Howani, 24, Medson Mdala 57, Abdul Lahimani, 38, Alick Petros Phiri, 40, and Rodgers Banda, 22.
