Nyirenda appointed as senior counsel

Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda, the Attorney General of Malawi, has been appointed as Senior Counsel (SC), a prestigious honor in the Malawian legal community.

This appointment, made by President Lazarus Chakwera, underscores Nyirenda’s significant contributions and exceptional service in the field of law.

In a letter addressed to Nyirenda, Allison M’bang’ombe, the Solicitor General and Secretary for Justice said formal ceremony, where he will receive letters patent signifying his appointment, is scheduled to take place on August 26, 2024, at Kamuzu Palace.

The letter of appointment reads: “I have the honour to inform you that it has pleased His Excellency, President Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee on the Appointment of Senior Counsel, to confer upon you the honour and rank of Senior Counsel.

“The formal ceremony, where His Excellency, the President, will grant you letters patent signifying your appointment as Senior Counsel, will take place on the 26th of August 2024 at Kamuzu Palace. I take this opportunity to congratulate you on your well-deserved appointment as Senior Counsel.”

Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda’s journey to this distinguished position is marked by dedication and exemplary service. Born in 1982, Nyirenda’s rise in the legal profession has been notable for its speed and impact.

After completing his LLB at the University of Malawi and his LLM in International Financial Law at the University of Sussex, Nyirenda’s career took off with roles in the Legal Aid Department and the Ministry of Justice.

Nyirenda’s expertise and commitment to justice were further demonstrated during his tenure at the Reserve Bank of Malawi, where he served as Manager of Ethics and Compliance, and In-house Legal Counsel.

His appointment as Attorney General in August 2021 by Chakwera marked a significant milestone, highlighting his exceptional legal acumen.

Internationally recognized as one of Africa’s leading legal minds, Nyirenda’s achievements have earned him accolades and respect. His innovative approach to law and dedication to public service have been praised by peers and global legal experts alike.
