The National Water Resources Authority (NWRA) has handed over a borehole to people of Kanyenda Village, Traditional Authority Kabudula, Lilongwe.
Speaking during the hand over ceremony, NWRA board chair James Mambulu said the borehole has been drilled as a token of appreciation to the villagers for their efforts to restore nature in the area.
“In December 2022 we came, explored this place as the source of Lingadzi river, the big river which you see passing through different townships in the capital Lilongwe, starts here”.
“Knowing how it has been causing floods in recent years, we decided to comeback in March 2023 to plant 2000 trees and when we came back for inspection this year we were pleased to see 1800 surviving trees that’s what motivated us to drill a borehole for them as appreciation and at the same time giving them safe water which they were lacking” said Mambulu
According to Mambulu they spent K8 million for the project to be completed.
In his remarks Group Village Headman Kanyenda was happy for the gift saying it will help address water borne diseases caused by non potable water.
Chief Kanyenda said the borehole will benefit more than 60 households in the area.
Parliamentarian for the area, Monica Chang’anamuno thanked NWRA for considering bailing out her people from contaminated water.
Chang’anamuno further appealed to the villagers to take care of the new borehole as well as continuing caring for the trees.
The National Water Resources was established in 2013 to promote the judicious and sustainable management, conservation, use and control of water resources and acquisition and regulation of rights to use water.
