The opening of Diplomat Private Hospital in Zomba is being hailed as a major step toward reducing Malawi’s reliance on foreign medical facilities and boosting the city’s economic landscape.
Founded by medical specialist Dr. Andrew Nankwenya, the new hospital is designed not only to expand healthcare options for Malawians but also to keep patients along with their medical expenses within the country.
Dr. Nankwenya highlighted that many citizens seek treatment abroad for conditions such as cancer, epilepsy, gastrointestinal illnesses, and maternal health challenges. The new facility aims to change that trend.
“By offering advanced treatment locally, we hope to ease the burden on people who often travel long distances or even leave the country to access medical care” he said during the launch.
Diplomat Private Hospital, whose construction began in 2022 and concluded in 2025, features 70 beds, an operating theatre, an ICU, and more than 75 rooms.
In an effort to raise the standard of care, Dr.Nankwenya revealed that the hospital will also host visiting medical specialists from other countries including India, South Africa, and the United States.
Local leaders say the facility’s impact reaches far beyond healthcare.
The Zomba City Mayor Councillor Christopher Jana, who presided over the ceremony, described the hospital as a transformative investment that has created jobs and enhanced the city’s urban appeal.
“Residents will no longer need to travel to Blantyre or Lilongwe for services . The hospital will also stimulate local businesses such as pharmacies through the purchase of medicines and supplies” he added.
Traditional leader, Senior Chief Mlumbe echoed the sentiment by praised Dr. Nankwenya for prioritizing the needs of Zomba and Malawi by establishing a modern medical centre that strengthens both community health and regional development.
