The Malawi Red Cross Society (MRCS) aims to raise at least MK200 million during this year’s “Red Cross Flag Week” to bolster its humanitarian programs and disaster response initiatives. The week-long campaign will be launched on Thursday in Lilongwe at Kamuzu Palace with State President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera expected to preside over the event.
Established in 1966, MRCS provides emergency response, health services, and community development support to vulnerable populations across Malawi. The funds raised during the Flag Week will go towards disaster relief, blood donation drives, and first aid services in various settings.
Speaking during a media briefing in Lilongwe on Tuesday, Gloria Kunyenga, MRCS Director of Programs and Development, appealed to the public and the media to actively support the fundraising campaign.
“We do receive donations from various donors, but the main challenge is having start-up resources. When disaster strikes, we are the first responders. The money raised during Red Cross Flag Week helps us respond immediately before external aid arrives,” she said.
Kunyenga emphasized that while MK200 million is their target, surpassing it would significantly boost their capacity to respond effectively to emergencies. She assured the public that all funds raised will be used transparently and for their intended purposes.
Last year, MRCS raised MK56 million against a target of MK160 million. The funds were used to assist communities affected by cyclones in Karonga, Mangochi, and Balaka, as well as 336 Mozambican asylum seekers.
This year, MRCS is optimistic that with increased awareness and cooperation, they can exceed their MK200 million target. Kunyenga praised President Chakwera for his continued support, noting that he donated MK2 million during last year’s Flag Week launch.
“We sincerely appreciate President Chakwera for leading by example and encouraging individuals and corporate entities to support Malawi Red Cross Society,” she added.
MRCS Disaster Management Fundraising Coordinator, Roster aKufandiko, said the organization has lined up several activities to mobilize resources. “Our volunteers will be on the ground with donation tins, while media campaigns on radio, television, and in print will help amplify our message. We have also issued donation request letters to various companies and institutions,” he said.
Red Cross Flag Week is held annually worldwide following the commemoration of World Red Crescent Day on May 8. This year’s campaign runs from May 8 to 17 under the theme “On the Side of Humanity,” underscoring the importance of unity and collective action in addressing humanitarian challenges.
