The Anglican Diocese of Upper Shire has taken a significant step towards promoting financial empowerment and sustainable development in local communities with the launch of its Savings Ministry.
The K80 million, three-year project, funded by UK-based organization Five Talents, aims to instill a culture of saving and investing among individuals and groups across 19 parishes in Zomba, Balaka, and Mangochi districts.
Speaking at the launch ceremony on Monday 05 ,2025 ,Bishop William Mchombo emphasized the importance of economic self-reliance and entrepreneurship training in lifting the lives of the less privileged.
“This program is designed to equip church members with the knowledge and skills to manage their finances effectively, participate in household and church development, and break the cycle of poverty,” he said.
The Savings Ministry will provide training in financial literacy, encourage the formation of savings groups, and promote investment in meaningful projects.
According to Bishop Mchombo, this initiative will have a broader impact on local communities, including improved access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure.
Winnie Sadyalunda, representing ADUS congregants, welcomed the initiative, stating that it will empower individuals to become financially independent and contribute more effectively to church development.
“This program will help us break free from the cycle of borrowing at
interest rates and deepen our roots in the community,” she said.
By promoting financial literacy and empowerment, the Anglican Diocese of Upper Shire’s Savings Ministry is poised to make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals and communities, fostering a culture of saving and sustainable development.
