Members of Parliament (MPs) have said they will donate bags of maize and cash in response to the floods that have displaced 48 households in Rumphi East Constituency, following heavy rains in the past days.
Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, MP for Kasungu North, Mike Bango said he thought it wise to come in after the legislator for the area, Kamlepo Kalua presented the issue in House.
“Indeed the situation looks bad in Rumphi due to floods so as members of Parliament we need to lead by example, for me am donating five bags of maize” said Bango who offered five bags of maize
Taking his turn, Leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda followed suit by promising a donation of 10 bags of maize and 400,000 Kwacha.
Chimwendo further assured victims of government’s efforts to support them.
“Government has concluded it’s assessment and arrangements are in place to support the victims” he said
Chimwendo further said there are measures in place to makesure such natural calamities gets timely response.
“We passed the bill in the house last year where we trying to capacitate councils to be the first ones to respond before capital hill comes in and support”.
“We have also the District Disaster Risk Fund which is supposed to be funded and it will be vital in handling the smaller cases of disasters at Council level which will be ensuring timely response”
On his part, Kalua thanked fellow parliamentarians for the donation and appealed for more support from well wishers.
