As the ruling Malawi Congress Party (MCP) is expected to hold its convention from August 8 2024, one of the candidates vying for the secretary general’s position, Alex Major, has said that the party failed to Manage the Tonse Alliance.
Addressing reporters in Lilongwe on Tuesday, Major said there were ways that the party could do to bring unity among the alliance members, but it failed.
His comments comes barely a month after UTM, MCP’s main partner left the alliance.
Petra and Aford also announced that they had left the alliance earlier.
“I know what I am saying because I was part of the negotiating team for the alliance. The party failed to manage it,” said Major without disclosing how MCP failed to do so.
He said once voted into office, he will make sure that alliances are formed based on mutual trust and that they are sustained.
The Tonse administration, led by President Lazarus Chakwera and late Saulos Chilima, dislodged the former governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) of Peter Mutharika in the June 23 2020 Fresh Presidential Election.
