Malawi is this weekend expected to roll out malaria vaccine for children under age five in 11 districts.
The vaccine roll out follows the completion of the pilot phase.
The RTS,S vaccine, which was tested in Ghana, Kenya and Malawi, took more than 30 years to develop.
It has raised hopes of saving some of the more than 400,000 people who die annually from the mosquito-borne disease, most of them African children.
The Program Manager for National Malaria Control Program in the Ministry of Health, Michael Kayange said Malaria remain public health problem in the country because it records 6 million cases every Year and records 2500 death a year.
He said the vaccine is targeting under 5 children because they are the most affected burden of Malaria and It will help to reduce malaria cases and child deaths among children in the country.
Kayange said the ministry intend to reach out to over 900 thousand children in the 11 targeted districts.
In Malawi, the disease accounts for 36% of all hospital outpatients and 15% of hospital admissions.
The vaccine will roll out in kalonga, nkhatabay, ntchitsi, mchinji, Lilongwe rural, mangochi machinga, balaka, phalombe, chikwawa and nsanje districts.
