In a bid to boost revenue collection and fight fraud in the country, the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority- MACRA has launched the Revenue Assurance System (RAS) which will be fully functional by 31st May 2024.
Speaking during a press conference in Lilongwe on Thursday, MACRA director general Daud Suleman said the RAS will among many things promote a fair and competitive market environment, leading to better services and pricing for consumers.
Suleman added that the system will also ensure accurate billing whereby consumers are charged correctly for the services they use, promoting fairness and transparency.
“We are excited this morning to announce the launch of the Revenue Assurance System that will eliminate some of the hiccups the communication industry in Malawi had. One of the major hiccups that will be eliminated by this system is revenue leakage. By eliminating revenue leakages, operators can reinvest in their infrastructure, potentially leading to better service quality for users. RAS will significantly enhance MACRA’s ability to accurately verify revenue, ensuring that all due taxes and fees from operators are properly accounted for,” said Suleman.
Suleiman assured Malawians that the new system will in no way intervene with their privacy as it will not be able to eavesdrop their conversations or access their communications.
