The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has highlighted the critical role of postal codes, street naming, and house numbering in enabling swift emergency responses by fire, police, and ambulance services, among others.

Kondwani Kachika, Director of Postal and Economic Development at MACRA, shared these remarks in Blantyre on Monday during the Code Yanga Real Estate Workshop.

The event, held under the theme “Elevating Real Estate Standards with the National Address System,” aimed to promote the adoption of structured addressing in urban development.

In an interview with PL FM and GD TV, Kachika explained that the initiative will help transform urban areas into more organized and user-friendly townships and cities.

“A lot of work has already been done. The implementation of this initiative began in 2018, with standards set for postal codes, street naming, and house numbering,” said Kachika.

Prince Matchika, a certified real estate practitioner, praised the Code Yanga initiative, stating: “This addressing system is a game-changer for Malawi’s real estate sector. With proper street names and house numbers, we can easily locate properties, verify addresses for transactions, and improve service delivery.”
