President Lazarus Chakwera on Wednesday urged Leader of Opposition in Parliament, George Chaponda, to be cautious about what he predicts for others, lest he becomes a false prophet.
He was responding to Chaponda’s comment regarding the State of the Nation Address (SONA), which he described as the last one for Chakwera, as he will not be re-elected in the forthcoming elections.
“I acknowledged that this year’s State of the Nation Address was the last for President Chakwera and his administration before we go to the polls on 16th September this year. As for Chakwera, the time has come for him to prepare his exit,” he said
However, Chakwera said Chaponda’s remarks are not new to him.
“Someone stood in this Parliament and told us that I and the mighty Malawi Congress Party (MCP) will never rule this country over his dead body, but we all know what happened.
“So, I would like to urge the leader of opposition to leave prophecies to those who are blessed with them. He should stop issuing false prophecies,” he said, falling short of mentioning former president Peter Mutharika, who swore that Chakwera will not rule Malawi as long as he is alive.
He added that that he trust God and Malawians to be the best judges of his leadership.
“I trust that Malawians, who were kind enough to have me serve as their President even though they know I am not an angel, are also fair enough to have me continue serving as their President because they know I am not the demon sone here point me to be.
“All that I am, Madam Speaker, is an imperfect human being who is devoted to bringing development to Malawians despite the most difficult economic conditions and the most painful climate conditions that have affected all the nations in our region and that have hit Malawians in harsher ways than any President before me has ever had to deal with,” he said
