The ministry of information and digitalisation has on the sidelines of the 2023 Annual Broadcasters Conference called on broadcasters in the country to turn the industry commercial in a bid to grow broadcasting in and outside Malawi.

Organised by the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) under the theme “Shaping the future of Broadcasting and Digital technologies”, the conference brought together broadcasters across the country.

Minister of information and Digitalisation Moses Kumkuyu appreciated the positive role the broadcast industry is playing in developing the country but said there is need to catch up with international standards that allow the broadcasters to make money out of their content.

Kumkuyu said the game of broadcasting has changed therefore there is need for the industry players to always be up to their game.

“We are here today to launch the second Broadcasters Conference at a time where broadcast and digital services have taken centre stage. The broadcasting industry forms part of the digital world and Its positives are many to mention.
The government understands the role that broadcasters play in the development of the country therefore as government we are always ready to work together with these industry players and that is why the ministry is reviewing some of its policies pertaining to the broadcast industry. These policies will in return help push for the commercialisation of broadcast and digital services in Malawi”, said Kumkuyu.

On his part, MACRA Director General Daudi Suleman said the conference aims at bringing together all players in the broadcasting industry.

Suleman said the regulatory authority does not see the industry players as a game of “you against us” but rather would like to work together to grow the industry.

“It is important to have these conferences annually as they help to grow the industry and national at large. We believe in coming together we can be able to share our challenges, successes stories and future plans thereby moving together as an industry”, he said.

The conference will run from 18 to 19 December 2023.
