Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) member Francis Kasaila has resigned as Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) commissioner.
According to a statement signed by MEC spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa, Kasaila officially resigned from the Commission with effect from 23 April 2025 on personal grounds.
His resignation comes a day after winning the party’s parliamentary primary elections in Nsanje Central constituency.
“The Commission extends its sincere gratitude to Commissioner Kasaila for his dedicated service and invaluable contribution during his tenure, whereby he also served as Chairperson of the Media, Civic and Voter Education Committee.
“In line with the constitution and legal provisions, Commissioner Kasaila will endeavour to comply with Section 4(8) of the Malawi Electoral Commission Act which states that “A member of the Commission may resign from his office at any time by notice in writing of the President”
“Following this development, the Commission is now composed of five members, and the Chairperson. The Commission assures the public that this number remains within the legal threshold for a quorum, as the law requires the presence of not less than four commissioners for the conduct of official business,” reads the statement
I never thought about it that way—thanks for the insight!
