People’s Party (PP) president Joyce Banda has added her voice to calls for a voters roll audit to ensure fair and credible elections.
Speaking at a rally in Zomba district, the former president stated that a genuine audit is crucial to restoring public trust in the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC).
Banda recounted a past visit from former MEC chairperson, late Maxon Mbendera, who, despite security concerns, she allowed to enter her home.
“He asked me if I have ever seen a MEC chairperson announcing elections results in tears,” Banda said, implying irregularities led to his emotional state.
Mbendera, who until his death was a judge of the Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal, oversaw the administration of the 2024 general elections.
Critics accused Mbendera of favoring the ruling party during the electoral process. This perception raised concerns about the impartiality of the MEC under his leadership. There were widespread allegations of irregularities in the voting process and the handling of electoral results. Observers pointed out issues such as discrepancies in voter rolls and delays in announcing results, which led to skepticism about the integrity of the election.
“I share this because being a MEC chairperson is an immensely pressured role, and I encourage future chairpersons to draw inspiration from Chifundo Kachale,” she said
Kachale who is a Judge of the High Court of Malawi, currently serving as the Judge-in-Charge of the Commercial Division in Lilongwe, oversaw the administration of the 2020 presidential elections. His leadership was crucial during a time of political uncertainty, ensuring that the process was conducted transparently and in accordance with the law.
Banda stated that doubts surrounding the Commission’s integrity risk election chaos and public anger, leading to their rejection of the current system.
Citing concerns about missing names in the register, she demanded for a complete audit and urged all eligible voters to verify their registration to ensure everyone has the opportunity to exercise their right to vote, which represents the voice of the people.
