Chief Resident magistrate Austin Banda sitting at Lilongwe has committed to the High Court’s Financial Crimes Division the case involving former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) governor and UTM president Dalitso Kabambe.
The others are Henry Mathanga, Leonard Kandoje, Leston Ted Mulli, Joseph Khupe, Felton Mulli, and Justin Fredson Likhunya. They were initially arrested in 2021 but were later released on bail.
They are being accused of conspiring to Use Public Office for Advantage, contrary to section 35 read with section 25B(1) of the Corrupt Practices Act and Money Laundering, contrary to section 42(1)(b) of the Financial Crimes Act.
Earlier in the day, one of the defense lawyers John Kalampa asked for an adjournment as one of the accused, Kandonje was not feeling well and that the court was waiting for the doctor’s examination to see if he could stand trial.
However, lead State prosecutor Kamudoni Nyasulu argued that the case can still continue because the other accused are available, which the Magistrate agreed with.
