HCC members after hiking Kaning'ina forest hill where they also planted trees led by Moyale Barracks in Mzuzu

This Saturday members of the Hill Climbing Club (HCC) will open the year 2025 with a walk n run that will include running up and down sand dunes at Senga Bay in Salima.

Speaking to Atlas, National Coordinator M’theto Lungu said it’s a practice by the group, which is in its 10th year since establishment, to open every year in style.

“In 2024 we braved over 20km from Liwonde to Malape Hills, where we also encouraged sustainable environmental stewardship to the community and planted trees at a primary school.

This year, we are challenging the Chingerenge route with the sand dunes being the pick point,” he explained.

The group, which has members from a wide spread of professionalism from both civilian and uniformed institutions, and individuals, also boasts of representation in the US, UK, Zambia and Tanzania, among other places.

“As a growing fitness and healthy living network, we encourage everybody anywhere to join us. We have partner fitness groups spread across Malawi and formations in the diaspora.”

HCC, whose Patron is Godfrey Achinangolo Chindenga, has partnerships and chapters in Mzuzu, Kasungu, Mchinji, Dzaleka, Mvera, Dedza, Salima, Mangochi, Machinga, Zomba, Mulanje, and Blantyre. These play an important role of galvanising membership and hosting national and local fitness events.

Fitness activities the club conducts including hiking mountains and hills, long distance walks and rinks, roadwalks, social shooting events, trail brazing, rain forest and game reserve visits and camping, boot camps, and many others.

Members are from all walks of life and age, fitness levels, race or colour, career, and language don’t form part of any limitations to join.

From March this year, members will be paying K20,000 annual membership apart from the usual activity participation fees.

As an entity, HCC also promotes forest and mountain preservation and is a key partner in the International Mountain Day (IMD) processes.

The Saturday challenge will have more than 50 paid up (K15,000 per head) people and end with a hearty reception at Mufrasa Backpackers Lodge at Senga Bay, for buffet, drinks and swimming.
